DISTRICT GOALS 2011-2012 to 2014-2015

  • Continue to support the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks in order to maintain high academic standards
  • By 2014-15 the district will no longer use its fund equity to balance the annual budget and will assess how to cover the reduction of special education PA 18 dollars
  • Continue to develop potential administrators within current staff

Welcome to South Lyon Community Schools! Our district is a large one, approximately 83 square miles. It encompasses the cities of South Lyon and New Hudson, parts of Lyon, Salem, Northfield, Green Oak, Wixom and Novi Townships and parts of three counties.

During the 2011-2012 school year, approximately 7,075 students will be served by seven elementaries, two middle schools and two high schools, all of which are modern, attractive and well equipped. The fact that each of our schools is fully accredited by the North Central Association (NCA) testifies to the quality of the educational programs offered to our children and each of our schools has received an "A" from the Michigan Department of Education.

Recently, an independent analysis was done nationally by an organization called the Center for American Progress. They rated school districts on how much academic achievement a district produces for each dollar spent relative to other districts in their state. They displayed their findings using a color coding system with red being the lowest rating and dark green being the highest, using a total of six possible colors. According to this analysis, South Lyon Community Schools was one of only 24 districts that received a dark green rating  out of the 502 districts in the state.

The community is very supportive of our schools as evidenced by the successful passage of five bond issues the past two decades. Many families have lived here for generations. Children, their parents and their grandparents have all been South Lyon students. In recent years, many new families have moved into the area and have quickly become a part of the community.

Volunteers in our school number in the hundreds and the support the community has shown has allowed us to provide a very sophisticated technology system, so that our students will be competitive, whether in college or in the world of work. South Lyon East High School, our second high school, was opened four years ago. It is a wonderful new building.

A strong belief in site-based decision making has resulted in Shared Involvement Process (SIP) teams at each of our schools. These teams made up of parents, teachers, students (at the high school), support staff and the building administrator help make decisions for their individual schools. For example, each school SIP team assists the building administrator in developing the budget for the following year. Goals are set, strategies for achieving the goals are developed and evaluations to determine whether the goals were accomplished are all part of the school and district SIP process.

Our MEAP and ACT/SAT scores are consistently higher than the State of Michigan and Oakland County averages. Our graduation rates are excellent. The South Lyon Community Schools are focused on student achievement.
