Welcome to South Lyon
Community Schools! Our district is a large one, approximately 83
square miles. It encompasses the cities of South Lyon and New
Hudson, the hamlet of Salem, parts of Lyon, Salem, Northfield,
Green Oak, Wixom and Novi Townships and parts of three counties.
During the 2009-2010 school year,
approximately 7,087 students will be served by seven elementaries, two middle schools and
two high schools, all of
which are modern, attractive and well equipped. The fact that
each of our schools is fully accredited by the North Central
Association (NCA) testifies to the quality of the educational
programs offered to our children.
The community is very supportive
of our schools as evidenced by the successful passage of five
bond issues the past two decades. Many families have lived here
for generations. Children, their parents and their grandparents
have all been South Lyon students. In recent years, many new
families have moved into the area and have quickly become a part
of the community.
Volunteers in our school number
in the hundreds and the support the community has shown has
allowed us to provide a very sophisticated technology system, so
that our students will be competitive, whether in college or in
the world of work. South Lyon East High School,
our second high school, was opened two years ago. It is a wonderful new
building.
A strong belief in site-based
decision making has resulted in Shared Involvement Process (SIP)
teams at each of our schools. These teams made up of parents,
teachers, students (at the high school), support staff and the
building administrator help make decisions for their individual
schools. For example, each school SIP team assists the building
administrator in developing the budget for the following year.
Goals are set, strategies for achieving the goals are developed
and evaluations to determine whether the goals were accomplished
are all part of the school and district SIP process.
Our MEAP and ACT/SAT scores are
consistently higher than the State of Michigan and Oakland
County averages. Our graduation rates are excellent. The
South Lyon Community Schools are focused on student achievement. |
