School Accreditation
The AdvancEd/ NCA accreditation process is firmly
embedded in the Millennium Middle School (MMS) continuous School Improvement
Process. This process provides a solid framework for increasing student
achievement at Millennium Middle SchooL In December 2009 and January 2010, MMS
participated in a Quality Assurance Review and was fully accredited. The QAR
team commended Millennium for our numerous student support systems, development
of collaborative student-teacher relationships, comprehensive management system
for student achievement data, and numerous opportunities to engage in analysis
and review of student performance and school effectiveness.
During 2010-2011, we began a new cycle of school
improvement. A major focus was on the review and development of our updated
mission and belief statements with involvement from all stakeholders.
Additionally, we completed an updated school profile and comprehensive needs
assessment. As we enter into 2011-2012, we will be preparing our Annual Progress
Report for AdvancEd and will continue our focus on increasing achievement for
all students as we also work to close gaps in our targeted subgroups.
Welcome to Millennium Middle School
At Millennium Middle School we are proud of the academic achievements,
talents, and creativity of our students. Our success is due to our MMS
educational partnership comprised of the staff, the parents, the community and
the students. Our school population is made up of over 850 students and a
dedicated staff consisting of 2 administrators, 31 full time general education
teachers, 11 shared teachers, 5 special education teachers, 1 full time and one
part time counselor, 3 secretaries, 1 media specialist, 1 hall monitor, 4 food
service workers, 2 building engineers, 5 custodians, 4 lunch aides and part time
staff consisting of a speech pathologist, a school social worker, an ESL
(English as Second Language) teacher, an academically talented facilitator, a
careers facilitator, and a restorative practices facilitator. We have
established and maintain high expectations for student behavior and attendance.
The average daily attendance at MMS is over 97%. Many opportunities exist for
students to be involved in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as
athletics, band, choir, drama, or a variety of clubs.
Parents and community are integral members of the MMS educational team. These
dedicated volunteers make a difference in the school environment by serving on
committees that discuss new/revised building procedures, building budgets,
fund-raising, school improvement, etc. To cultivate active parent and community
participation, C.H.E.E.R.S., M.S.P.T.O., Band Boosters, Choir Boosters, Eighth
Grade Dance Parent Committee, and the Shared Involvement Process Team (S.I.P.)
hold regular meetings throughout the school year.
MMS is committed to “quality with equity” a concept to improve the
performance of all students, focusing on equity of results and closing
achievement gaps. We are data-driven and results-oriented, implementing
instructional best practices to engage students, help them construct knowledge,
and enable them to demonstrate content mastery. The middle school curriculum
is designed to challenge all levels of ability and interests. In order
to achieve a quality education for each individual, students are offered as many
opportunities as possible, balancing academic requirements with elective
choices. The core curriculum at MMS meets the Standards and Benchmarks of the
Michigan Curriculum Framework, as well as the grade level content
expectations (GLCEs), and is aligned with the MEAP. Learning experiences are
provided in all areas of the core academic subjects and in a variety of elective
offerings. Millennium also houses the PLUS program, servicing the district’s
middle school students who are academically talented in mathematics and/or
language arts.
In addition to academics, Millennium fosters development of Habits of the
Mind which help students acquire the skills, attitudes, and habits necessary for
success not only as a learner and problem solver in the school setting, but also
as at home and, in the future, as a responsible adult in a workplace setting.
The Habits of Mind are comprised of: Persisting; Managing Impulsivity; Listening
with Understanding and Empathy; Thinking Flexibly; Metacognition; Striving for
Accuracy; Questioning and Posing Problems; Apply Past Knowledge to New
Situations; Thinking and Communicating with Clarity and Precision; Gathering
Data Through All Senses; Creating, Imagining, and Innovating; Responding with
Wonderment and Awe; Taking Responsible Risks; Finding Humor; Thinking
Interdependently; and Remaining Open to Continuous Learning. |
