School Improvement Goals
Prior to the opening of Centennial
Middle School, the original South Lyon Middle School (now Millennium
Middle School) was awarded accreditation status by the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools. When Centennial Middle School
opened, a portion of the already accredited middle school staff formed
the foundation of the second middle school. The staff at Centennial
Middle School utilized the 2002-2003 school year to become familiar with
our new building, new students, ne opportunities, and certainly new
challenges. After a year of observation and assessment, a profile was
developed in 2004 to establish the next cycle of the North Central
Process. From the data gathered from the student profile, the following
goals were established by the staff and approved by NCA:
- All Centennial Middle School students will
improve their ability to utilize critical thinking skills across the
curriculum.
- All Centennial Middle School students will
improve their writing skills across the curriculum.
This past year staff began to implement strategies
and assessments to address these goal areas.
The Centennial staff continues to gather data to
help direct instructional strategies at Centennial. Considering “trend”
data from assessments given here at CMS, the staff adjusts the AYP plan
on a regular basis to meet student needs.
The 2008-2009 School Improvement Plan continued to
focus on strategies and the assessment of the NCA target area goals. The
plan also includes implementing strategies from the Adequate Yearly
Progress plans created last year. In addition to the curriculum focus,
Centennial staff continues to explore new avenues for the use of
technology. Staff has utilized the Classroom Performance System, an
interactive assessment tool which provides immediate feedback to
students as well as providing data for teacher analysis to improve
instruction.
Welcome to Centennial Middle School!
Centennial Middle School is setting where all members
of the learning community are committed to providing excellent learning
and growth for all students. Originally a middle school opening in 1976,
hence the name Centennial, the building was later converted to an
elementary building where it served the community with this designation
until June of 2001. Re-opened in the Fall of 2002, Centennial is now the
second middle school, just down the road from its sister school,
Millennium Middle School. Students attending Centennial Middle School
are assigned to the building based on residence with the geographic
attendance boundaries of the school as well as the district’s School of
Choice Program.
Centennial Middle School is located in the City of
South Lyon in the southwest corner of Oakland County. Oakland County is
located north of Detroit, Michigan. This growing county is rich in
culture, resources, quality living opportunities and the home of many
major industries. Centennial is in close proximity to highly respected
colleges and universities. The building is a short drive to the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Eastern Michigan University in
Ypsilanti and Washtenaw Community College, also located in Ypsilanti.
Our mission statement reflects the high standards
and expectations we place on our students and ourselves. Students
maintain high academic achievement as well as high average daily
attendance. To realize these standards, the staff of 40 teachers, two
administrators, two secretaries, two data processors, one building
engineer, one social worker, six noon supervisors, four custodians,
along with parents and volunteers, are committed as a team for each
student to realize success. Our PTO and CHEERS volunteers are a
tremendous support to the programming at Centennial. Members of each of
these organizations contributed over 4000 hours last year to assist in
various activities throughout the year.
Now in our eighth year as the second middle
school, Centennial’s programming will continue to focus on meeting the
academic and social development of the students. The Centennial Staff is
committed to insuring that students will be prepared for their secondary
education and the demands they now face. In the fall of 2002, Centennial
became a member of the North Central Association. The staff will utilize
this school year to capitalize on the recently developed student profile
and performance goals, to develop strategies that will employed across
the building in order to promote improvement in student achievement.
The core curriculum at Centennial Middle School is
the foundation for the learning that takes place on a daily basis.
Students are provided rich learning experience in all areas of Language
Arts (reading, writing, speaking, listening and literature),
Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, Music,
Art, Technology and Vocal Music. All teaching staff meet North Central
certification requirements.
We continue to strive for excellence at Centennial
Middle School. A collaborative culture focus on creating the best
possible environment for students to learn and teacher to teach has been
achieved and nurtured ongoing basis. Programs such as our Links process
that blurs the lines between General and Special Education and the
Restorative Practices Model are just a couple of the initiatives that
make Centennial Middle School a special place to learn.
Teaching Staff
The Centennial staff is comprised of
40 dynamic teachers that are committed to the daily growth of our
students. Inclusive on our staff are five Special Education teachers, a
full time Media Specialist, and two full time Counselors, a Social
Worker and part time Speech Pathologist.
Extra Curricular
Centennial student athletes have a
wide variety of choices in terms of competitive sports. Centennial
Middle School is part of the Kensington Lakes Activities Association.
Other activities in band and student clubs are also available to
Centennial students.
