Welcome to Brummer Elementary School!

We are located in Green Oak Township, the only South Lyon School in Livingston County. The concept of the building was researched, constructed, and completed over a time period of two years. Our school has been open since the fall of 2000 and our staff and students work diligently to maintain the integrity of the building and the mission we have identified for ourselves. We are proud to report that it looks exactly the same as it did nine years ago when we opened our doors.

Our school was named after the William A. Brummer. He was a devoted, respected and loved South Lyon High School Counselor. We are proud to share his name.

Bill Brummer was a dedicated educator. He began teaching at South Lyon High School in 1973, in a special education classroom. He completed his first Masters of Arts in 1977 and a second MA in 1989, both from Eastern Michigan University. Being the very first WDIV Teacher of the Year (1986-87) at South Lyon High School was an award that Bill was honored with, but his comment was that there were many good teachers here in South Lyon. After teaching in a Resource Room environment for many years, he left the classroom and in September of 1992, Bill moved to a position as a guidance counselor. While in this position, Mr. Brummer worked as a liaison between SLHS and Oakland Technical Center (OTC), where many of our students attended to broaden their perspective of possibilities for after graduation. He also worked for OTC several summers in an administrative position. Bill received the Academy of Technology Special Recognition Award from OTC in 1991 and 1992.

On December 29, 1997, while working on his property up north with his family, Bill passed away. His family has been very honored that the community has chosen to remember him with our school.

School Improvement Goals

During the summer of 2007, our Steering Committee met to plan the activities for the year. Based on the results of the surveys and the assessment data, the following goals were selected for our school improvement plan:

  • All students will improve their writing across the curriculum.
  • All students will improve their reading comprehension across the curriculum. They met to formulate an action plan for the goals.

This action plan was shared with the staff in the fall of 2007. We began the implementation of the strategies (interventions) and assessment which will be used over the next three years.

Concept Of Our School

The concept of Brummer Elementary is designed around a neighborhood theme. Each of the four different colored neighborhoods operates as a school within a school. Teachers work together to provide an environment that creates unity and belonging for each student within their neighborhood, as well as belonging to a larger community, Brummer Elementary.

Staff and Students

Our staff consists of 26 teachers with over 400 years of combined teaching experience! Our school operates effectively because of the team work promoted between the parents, teachers, our principal, office staff, dining staff, building engineer, custodians, social worker, counselor and numerous volunteers.

Please feel free to contact the office staff at 248-573-8520. Teachers and the principal may be contacted by email when you use the last name, then first initial of the person you wish to communicate with and then follow with @slcs.us (ex. brunm@slcs.us).
